Budgeting Tips
[Tip Sheet]
- Make sure the development office creates its own budget or has significant input into the budget process. Don’t set the development goal by looking at the organization’s income and expenses and expect the development office to make up the deficit, based on that information alone.
- Budget realistically for professional salaries. You get what you pay for.
- Build into the budget enough money for professional conferences and seminars. Ongoing professional development is critical to success.
- Budget for upgrades to rapidly changing technology. Website development is a perfect example of how technology has evolved in just a few short years.
- Remember that development officers need to be active in the community in order to network through local Chambers of Commerce, Rotary clubs, etc. There should be a budget item for membership dues to these groups as well as AFP.
- Keep up with the latest trends by budgeting for books and other publications. Budgeting to purchase online research tools may be more cost effective than having the development officer go to the library to conduct research.
- Development communications should be professionally prepared but not appear to be too costly. Many organizations find the website is their most effective communication tool so a healthy budget for website development is a must.
- Special events often require up front seed money. Be sure to plan the monthly budget accordingly.
- If a consultant will be needed, get cost estimates foorm a number of firms and be sure to ask about expenses in addition to consulting fees.
- Evaluate the budget carefully and review quarterly so the organization can make adjustments if needed.
